Why we made this

We’re selling our Lincoln. Nothing complicated — we had the cash to buy something without a payment, and selling the Lincoln would help. We still haven’t sold it.

We’ve sold our own vehicles plenty of times over the years. It’s always been stressful, and it was never the strangers. It was not knowing whether we were doing it right.

Then, while buying an older car, we gave the seller a deposit. We hand-wrote the deposit document ourselves, standing in his house, and it was difficult to be sure it was sound. We almost forgot a few things before we signed it.

He seemed like a good man. We knew where he lived. We’d met his wife.

And not knowing whether that document was any good stayed with me the whole time — right up until I went back to finalize the purchase.

That’s the part nobody tells you about.

Most people don’t buy or sell a vehicle often enough to get good at it. And state and local requirements can change. Which parts apply can depend on where you are and your particular transaction.

So we put it in one place. The forms you may need, in the order you’d use them, and information from your own state about the transaction.

All of it is public already. The forms, the rules, what gets signed and by whom. It’s free, and right now so is everything here.

We don’t price your vehicle, inspect it, make decisions for you, or hold your money. That belongs to you, along with the person you’re transacting with.

We thought it would be helpful to have everything we could think of in one place — so that part is out of the way and you can focus on the part that really matters. Getting the transaction done.
